Children Love To Use Oil Pastels for Art Lessons!

Oil pastels are a drawing medium artists love to color with!

Children over the age of five can start using oil pastels for art lessons.

As an art teacher I love introducing these to my students to draw lines and color with.

My students get so excited when they first get to try them.

They are generally made with non-toxic oil and piments.

They have an oil feeling and texture.

They come in bright vibrant rich colors.

Artist traditionally use them because it’s an inexpensive way to achieve rich color.

Oil pastels are easy for artists to color large areas with quickly.

They can be used for simple line marks, and blending colors together.

They glide and make marks super easy without using too much pressure.

Young children learning to doodle can benefit from using these because how easy it is to glide them without arm strength.

This is one of reason I’m recommending these today.

Oil pastels work best on smooth uncoated paper.

You won’t need to buy any fancy paper. Plain copy paper works great.

Oil pastel sticks are easier to use than color pencils because they. are soft.

These are great for teaching basic drawing skills like drawing lines and shape.

You can teach children how to draw fun doodle images.

They can make drawing fun and exciting because they are so brilliant in colors.

Where to buy Oil Pastels for Children

You can find these in any arts and craft store selling drawing mediums for children. They are pretty common in the classroom for elementary schools.

You can buy your child a very good set of oil pastels for between $5.00 – $20.00 dollars.

You can also get a spectrum of rainbow colors to choose from.

The only difference between brands is the color choices and shapes. Other than that you don’t have to know too much about them.

Be sure that the sent comes with the basic rainbow of colors plus black, brown and white

I recommend storing them in a plastic bag when your child is all done using them.

Oil pastels can stain clothes, furniture and carpets.

They have strong colors so keep them stored away.

They also get marks from other colors…which is ok.

This is how professional artists use them.

So don’t worry if they start to looking messy, it’s normal in the art room.
