Kids Clay Modeling, explored hands on
Kids Clay Modeling is a curriculum with 29 clay modeling lessons. Every lesson increases in material handling and sculptural complexity, so skill builds with every lesson.
This curriculum shows how clay materials and modeling actions are offered within a prepared environment aligned with the Science Art Method™. Educators use these lessons to prepare clay workspaces, observe children’s engagement, and support independent exploration of form and structure.
Ready-to-Teach

- Prepared lessons that can be scheduled weekly, biweekly, or monthly
- Hands-on clay explorations children enjoy
- Guidance for preparing clay materials and work environments

Educators do not need to be artists to use this curriculum.
Lessons are designed to support observation, repetition, and independent clay exploration over time.
Complexity increases with every lesson
Every lesson adds new layers of clay handling, pressure and resistance, and form construction, so motor and spatial complexity increase with every lesson. Selection, pacing, and duration depend on observation, environment, and educator judgment.

Each Lesson Includes:
- An overview of the clay focus
- Suggested materials and tools
- Notes on what may be observed during engagement
The curriculum is designed to support independent modeling rather than copying forms or producing predetermined outcomes.
Children work with clay repeatedly, so familiarity with how clay resists and takes shape develops over time.
Educational alignment
- Supports learning through the Elements and Principles of Design
- Reflects the artistic process through open-ended lessons
- Aligned with national and international core arts standards
It is intended to support long-term development of sculptural confidence and independence.

Your guide
“I’ve taught over 200,000 children, and I still start every lesson the same way: one step at a time.”
Spramani Elaun is a former commercial graphic designer and illustrator with 30 years in art education. She spent 10 years running her homeschool art studio, 10 years teaching art in Montessori schools, and 10 years training Montessori educators around the world.
Her method comes from observing how children process art cognitively and through their senses, as they learn to paint, draw, mix colors, sculpt clay, and craft.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the Clay Modeling Curriculum For Children?
The Clay Modeling Curriculum For Children, also called Kids Clay Modeling, is a clay curriculum from Nature of Art® with 29 clay modeling lessons. It comes as a spiral-bound printed book or a digital PDF. Each lesson includes an overview of the clay focus, suggested materials and tools, and notes on what may be observed.
What ages is this curriculum for?
It is designed for a wide age range. Lessons are not assigned by age or grade. Educators choose lessons based on context, observation, and environment, and can revisit lessons as children grow.
Do I need to be an artist to teach these lessons?
No. Each lesson gives you the clay focus, materials, and notes you need to lead it. You do not need to be an artist to use this curriculum.
Does the curriculum show the order of the lessons?
No. Every lesson increases in complexity, so skill builds with each lesson. You select lessons based on your children, your space, and what you observe.
What kind of clay do I need?
All tools are beginner level. About 80% of the lessons use easy-to-find modeling clay. The rest suggest earth pottery clay, and can also be done with air-dry modeling clay. A materials and tools list is included.
How does clay modeling help children?
As children press, roll, and shape clay, they build hand strength, fine motor control, and spatial awareness. They learn how clay resists and takes shape, and they explore form and structure in three dimensions.
Is this a good homeschool clay curriculum?
Yes. It is written for one educator teaching the children in their care, which fits homeschool families well. Spramani Elaun homeschooled her own two children and ran a homeschool art studio for 10 years.
Can I use it as a Montessori art curriculum?
Yes. Spramani Elaun taught art in Montessori schools for 10 years and now trains Montessori educators around the world. The lessons fit a prepared environment, and the curriculum includes guidance for preparing clay materials and work environments.
Is this a training manual for teachers?
No. It is a teacher to student guide, written for one educator to use with the children in their care. It is not intended for staff training or school wide copying. For a school or co-op, email info@spramani.com about team licensing.
What is the Science Art Method™?
The Science Art Method™ is the framework behind this curriculum. Spramani Elaun developed it over 30 years of teaching children in real studios, and it belongs to Nature of Art®. Buying this curriculum does not give permission to teach or represent the method. The method is taught through The Art Teaching Blueprint™, a Nature of Art® course.
Which version should I choose, printed or digital?
The printed paperback is $145.00, with free shipping within the U.S. The digital PDF is $97.00, sent to your email, and you can print it yourself. Both are sold for one teacher under a single-user license.
Can I get a refund?
The printed version has a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Return it in new condition with the survey described in the refund section above. Digital curriculum cannot be refunded once it is delivered.
