Drawing With Markers | Elementary Children

This summer the hottest art medium elementary children are loving is dual tip markers.

So today I want to share some tips on buying markers for children.

If you are looking for art supplies for summer – markers will sure put a smile on your child’s face.

When I worked as a professional illustrator my favorite medium for drawing was markers!

Elementary grade children love using markers.

Children at these ages can learn how-to blend markers, plus how-to care for them as well.

What’s a dual tip marker?

Each side of the marker has two different tip styles.

Dual tips usually come in either a fine point, paintbrush, or a chisel slanted nib.

This means children can draw with two types of tips in one marker.

The paintbrush nib can make wide, medium and even fine lines drawing marks.

What is a drawing marker nib?

The nib is the material at the tip holding the pigment.

Nibs can fray if they are pressed too hard when children draw.

Some marker nibs can be replaced if damaged.

Tip: Teach children how not to press hard on the very tip, they will keep their tip shape longer.

Markers are great because…

  • They are easy for children to travel with
  • Markers make bold bright colors
  • Dry instantly
  • Marker sets come in a variety of 12 to 24 colors
  • Cost range from $10.00 – $40.00

Choosing the right paper for children to draw on

Makers absorb right through paper… that’s a fact.

If you are buying a sketchbook or paper the maker will absorb both.

Even if you buy a high quality mix media grade paper it still will absorb the paper.

Choose smooth papers for nibs to last longer.

Markers can blend with other mediums

Markers can blend with watercolor paintings.

Wax color pencils can blend into marker marks.

Types of Markers

Markers come in water-based, alcohol-based, or solvent-based.

I don’t recommend alcohol-based or solvent-based for early childhood children.

Elementary children are old enough to use alcohol and solvent-based with instruction.

Children should always use markers in a good ventilated room.

What can elementary children draw with markers?

Inspire your child to doodle their favorite video, cartoon or book characters:
Star Wars
Manga
Fantasy
Fairies
Pokémon

You can see in my photo example my young student Raya got inspired to create a fantasy character from one of their favoite books, Wings of Fire, The flames of hope by Tui T. Sutherland.

Paired up with a great journal your child will love to draw and create with markers.
