Organizing Color Pencils

Kids love drawing with colors!

In this blog I want to share a fun way to get organized and ready for many art projects using color pencils.

This tip will excite kids to try color pencils out, and even start doodling more.

I get so many compliments year round about how my art classes and workshops are colorful and inviting.

It’s my Color Pencil Hack!

You can see many of these mason jars filled with color pencils in my pictures on my social media sites like Instagram or facebook.

I separate and organize each hue in one jar..

Here’s why I organize color pencils in mason jars:

1. As an artist I need to get to my colors quickly, and know my value choices I can create with.

2. When I see other colors I get new ideas and can alter my original idea into something more exciting.

3, The minute my students lay their eyes on my color pencil jars and see them separated by hue, the gears start turning with new ideas.

4. The jars make it easy to identify colors when lighting is not bright enough.

5. Clean up is a snap, kids love organizing them back into my jars just like a fine artist, it even becomes a fun stimulating game.

I’ve done this for many years, and it’s always the attraction in my art studio.

I usually find and buy my mason jars at discount super stores.

Always go for the heavy bottom jars so kids don’t knock them over easily.

And guess what!… I’ve never had a single student break one, in case you’re concerned about working with glass.

So if you think about collecting a bunch of green color pencils together, you might notice there’s dark forest type greens, mint green, candy apple green, deeper dark greens and maybe even pale light greens..

This really makes color choices interesting and gives the artist a chance to learn different values, intensities and saturation.

Color is fun to use and a relaxing activity.

I share many of these ideas in my art education books like “Kids Color Theory”.

Giving kids lots of opportunities to work with color is good art literacy.

Try it out, I promise you’ll get the attention of your students or family to make more drawings!

Have a colorful week!
