How to Recycle Your Kids’ Crayons | Crayon Donation Program
By Spramani Elaun
Why I Started Recycling Kids’ Crayons
Over many years of teaching art, I watched crayons pile up quickly. Families, teachers, friends, and students often passed along bags of broken or well-loved crayons. Throwing them into the trash never felt right. That curiosity led me to learn more about how crayons are made and what happens to them after they are discarded. What I discovered inspired a more sustainable path forward.
The Environmental Problem With Crayons
Most traditional crayons are made from paraffin wax, similar to the wax used in household candles. Paraffin wax and pigments can take many years to naturally break down, even under ideal conditions. When large quantities of crayons are thrown away, they contribute to long-term landfill waste. Because crayons are used widely by children, the environmental impact adds up quickly. Recycling crayons helps reduce this unnecessary waste.

From Recycled Crayons to Colour Blocks™
As I experimented with ways to reuse old crayons, I began reshaping them into sturdy, child-friendly forms. Those early experiments led to the creation of handcrafted square block crayons. In 2008, the first Colour Blocks™ were sold at a local street market in San Diego. What began as a small recycling effort grew into Colour Blocks, a crayon company built around sustainability and reuse.

What Makes the Crayon Donation Program Meaningful
The crayon donation program exists to keep old crayons out of landfills and give them a second life. Donated crayons are recycled into new, usable art supplies for children. This process supports environmental awareness while also encouraging creativity. The program helps families, schools, and communities participate in simple, meaningful recycling efforts. Every donation contributes to reducing waste.

How Families and Schools Can Get Involved
Recycling kids’ crayons starts with awareness. Families and schools can collect old crayons rather than discarding them. Many communities choose to organize group collections to make a bigger impact. Crayon recycling programs also help open conversations with children about caring for the environment. These shared efforts reinforce the values of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Education and Environmental Awareness
Beyond recycling, the program focuses on education. Learning why recycling matters helps children understand their role in protecting the planet. Crayons offer a relatable way to talk about sustainability because they are part of everyday childhood experiences. Small actions, like saving old crayons, can lead to larger environmental awareness. Education is a key part of lasting change.
Why Recycling Crayons Matters for the Future
Recycling crayons shows children that creativity and responsibility can work together. Giving materials a second life reduces waste and models thoughtful choices. These experiences help children understand that everyday actions matter. When families recycle together, sustainability becomes part of daily life. Simple steps can lead to meaningful environmental impact.
