Paint Branches n’ Sticks, Kids Art Project

By Spramani Elaun

If you’re trying to think about ways to teach kids how to paint, I want you to know the easiest way to teach painting basics is by painting simple natural objects like branches and sticks.

Kids can paint collaborative or independently, but kids love painting branches!

If you go back to some of my blog post, I explain painting natural elements can be a great way to introduce painting art projects.

You can read some of my other blog post like painting leaves, rocks and recycled objects to see how simple this can be to teach the basics.

Painting sticks and branches can teach the basics like how to dip a paintbrush, how to make brush strokes, how to mix colors.

In my book “Kids Painting” I discuss the benefits of teaching kids simple art lesson before complex canvas projects, and even how to set-up for these types of art projects.

The great thing is natural branches and sticks can be found on the land almost anywhere.

I collect branches and sticks from my beach walks, hiking trails or local trees.

Use Earth’s natural resources!

Prep for painting branches & sticks

A large surface to lay the branch on like a coffee table is perfect.

You want the children to be able to move all round the branch to reach all branches with a paint brush.

Branches or sticks from any type of tree will work.

I sometimes look for branches with knots and textures.

Dust your branches or sticks before painting.

They may have collected dirt or webs.

You don’t want kids to catch loose debris on their paint brushes.

Children can’t make a mistake painting natural branches, they always come out beautiful.

Prepare a palette filled with a variety of colors children can choose from.

A paper plate, or recycled egg carton can also work as a palette to hold paints.

Having a tiny, medium, and large, wide paint brush available is perfect for all brush stroke desires.

If you don’t have all three that’s OK, one medium-sized paint brush works well with kids.

Warmly,

Spramani
