Holiday Craft Making Ideas with Twigs, Sticks and String | Kids Projects
By Spramani Elaun
After a weekend painting with kids, I wanted to do something relaxing with my hands that didn’t require using paint.
I started to think about simple materials like the lovely twigs and sticks found on the ground and what we could make with them.
Twigs and string are simple natural elements and easy to find outdoors!
This holiday craft supports child-lead inspiration and lots of creative ideas with no limits, love it!
The other wonderful thing about this project it has the calming and relaxing effects hand knitting provides.
This project also promotes positive benefits for fine-motor development.
We set out on a nature walk and I was able to find all kinds of nice twigs and sticks different sizes.
We collected string and yarn scraps from past art projects, in nice bright colors.
I added hemp and natural twine to this collection.
Another fun thing we did, we went into the garage looking for cool objects to combine in our creations like old gears, nails and old hardware.
I also visited our beautiful Pinterest Boards online for inspiration and found plenty of ideas for kids to create with twigs and strings.
Here’s a couple of ideas my daughter Laurun and I had fun coming-up with.
Once we headed into the art studio, I was taken by surprise how relaxed we felt making and playing with twigs and string.
Materials to collect:
Scissors
String
Twigs
Paper rolls
Hammer
Screws
Gears old from broken clocks
Safe kids acrylic paint
Wood scraps
Glue
Twig & Yarn Sculptures
Glue Tip
I found many beautiful string projects online, but most of them required using glue.
I wanted to keep away from long drying times or sticky hands in yarn.
This twig and string project should have a relaxing feeling for the child.
This project can be inexpensive by collecting materials you already have or up-cycling scraps around your home.
Try to avoid difficult instructions.
Allow kids to have fun and develop their own ideas.
Wrap and tie strings to avoid using glue.
Of course – I couldn’t resist using paint on my paper roll string art project.
Once I got going creative ideas started popping into my head.
Get crafty with twigs and strings this holiday,
Spramani
