Best beginner art supply list for getting children started on art projects.

By Spramani

Many parents and teachers walk up to my sales booth or art classes and love looking at my art supplies, but have no idea what to buy or where to even start. As a full-time kids art teacher, I’ve come up with some easy suggestions for starting a beginner artist out. So in this blog I will list the best art supplies I know are great for a beginner artist. This list is high quality, safe and non-toxic for any young student. There’s five areas I teach, I call them the 5 Domains of Visual Arts: Drawing, Painting, Color Theory, Clay Modeling and Crafting. Today I’m focusing on three areas to make shopping less complicated for you to get started.

  • Drawing
  • Painting

Basically everything under drawing needs paper. Paper can come in loose sheets, or you can buy a sketchbook, or even coloring books to accompany art supplies. Some of the mediums may need special paper like pastels. They need pastel or charcoal paper found in most craft and art supply stores. Other things you might consider buying is a pencil sharpener for the color pencils. You can follow each link to see descriptions and even purchase these items at my online store.

Basically everything under painting needs a paintbrush, a palette to hold paints, and a surface to paint. Surfaces can be many different things like  canvas, woodcrafts, rocks, sticks, and even thick watercolor paper. Canvas can also come in sketch pad form too! You might want to consider buying a cover-up smock to protect clothes from stains. You can follow each link to see descriptions and even purchase these products.

Hands are usually all you need for modeling clay. Clays are basic to figure out, some are non-harden, and some harden overnight, or by heat. Some basic clays can be baked in your very own oven, and painted on when dry. Other things you might want to consider is buying modeling tools, and maybe a rolling-pin.
